Leaving Sicily, by ferry April 18

The straights are so narrow that you could see the mainland from Sicily ( this view is looking at mainland Italy from the Sicilian harbor at Messina)

This image has not been altered! The water was crazy bright blue

Glad to be out of the car!(which was below deck)
Later that morning - after driving for a couple of hours...(April 18)

We drive up and east to the "instep" of Italy near Taranto and see this castle/restaurant and walk the beach
( first time to the Sea of Taranto)

view of castle from below, on the beach - and off to Matera
Matera, in Basilicata - southern Italy

Sunset in Matera

We visit a museum that explains how people lived in these caves unfrom the 1100's to the 1950's
And see what it looked like in 1930's (no plumbing - just a cistern that gathered rainwater and no electricity)

this is the kitchen of the 1930's museum "Sassi" (above)

This is what a renovated "Sassi" - the name of the cave and tuft brick dwellings - looked like.
This is where we stayed in a B and B, above is the breakfast area.
